Twitter is a powerful platform that allows people to share their thoughts on any topic and connect with people all over the world. A common way to connect with people about a larger topic is the use of hashtags. Hashtags such as #BlackLivesMatter and #NastyWoman have allowed people to voice their opinions on serious issues in the United States recently. But what happens when hashtags intersect with one another?
This is what happened with #ActualLivingScientist and #DressLikeAWoman, which began trending within days of eachother.
#DressLikeAWoman began with an article about President Trump’s new policy about the dress code for female staffers.
And the hashtag took off…
But when the two hashtags intersected, Twitter users were exposed to interesting, intelligent and empowering women.
The combined use of #ActualLivingScientist and #DressLikeAWoman is one of many examples of people discovering intersectionality and responding to potentially negative situations with positive and informative repsonses via social networks.
